The Good Life and the Fully Functioning Person

This gratitude practice quickly becomes quite addictive as the more you I take the time to reflect on what I am grateful for every day, the more time each day gives me to notice things to be grateful for.

  1. Grateful for having a productive day yesterday full of working activity. Although tiring, it is nevertheless quite satisfying to accomplish several tasks and keep chiping away at the list if overdue emails in my business mailbox.
  2. Grateful for finishing a very interesting book Mind Wars. As I already mentioned I love finishing books, gives me a sense of small accomplishment, completion and excitement about the next literary adventure.
  3. Grateful for stumbling upon a small website which lists excerpts from philosophical works of the past century which is a much easier way to digest otherwise heavy, dry and quite insurmountable volumes on the topic.
  4. Grateful for the excerpt from “On Becoming a Person” by Carl Rogers which talks about the “good life” as a process rather than a destination, with defining characteristics of this process being increasing openness to experiences, increasing awareness, trust in and  full use of all sensory and emotional perceptions of the person and as a result an increasing trust in the “whole organism” rather than just the mind to choose the correct behavior in any given situation.
  5. And now for something completely different, grateful for the coffee and cake for breakfast – it seems to be my prevailing diet of this week aside from lobster, crab and red wine. If nothing else, at least it’ll make me chuckle if I ever care to read back through my posts in the months to come.
  6. Grateful for another laid back day I am enjoying. Work and rest seem to be the internal cycle of life if you let it be without attempting to do too much of either.
  7. Grateful for the daily challenges and awareness of my emotions, both good and bad. Being the one to experience them but also the observer of the experience itself adds another dimension to the daily, if not hourly ups and downs of life. And while far from being able to fully control how I feel or react in any given moment, just the awareness of feelings and pondering as to their origins make the life quite pleasant and interesting indeed.
  8. Grateful for the Chris Howard’s NLP Practitioner audio course I have been listening to over the past few days. While it does help me get through my daily morning chores without getting too hang up about them, it also presents a lot of interesting information on human subconsciousness  and some possible ways of affecting it.
  9. Grateful for the auto saving feature of this wonderful piece of online software that so cleverly preserved all of my above musings while my Firefox crashed unexpectedly.
  10. Grateful for Flickr and my new digital SLR. I think I have taken as many pictures in attempt to capture and communicate my life and experiences since I got it last month as I perhaps have in the whole of last 6 years of my “adult” life. Hooray for digital photography and online storage solutions!
